Letter: Look out for revisionist history

The Columbian
Published: July 30, 2012, 5:00pm

The revisionist history of those promoting religion as the savior of mankind is seriously flawed. May I remind John Cannon (Letters, “Secularism is dangerous philosophy,” July 23) that many Germans during World War II were God-fearing Christians.

Many in the Gestapo and S.S. were Christians. When one considers the Inquisition; the Holocaust as practiced against Armenians, Jews, and Cambodians; the Crusades; the various Protestant vs. Catholic wars including the recent conflict in Northern Ireland; the massacre of the Tamils in Indonesia; the Muslims vs. the Hindus in India and Pakistan; the Christians who enslaved blacks in America and tried to exterminate Native Americans, and many more examples that space does not allow listing, it stretches any rational mind to accept religion as the pathway to earthly salvation.

Are atheists any more moral than those who find religion comforting? Probably not. But to ascribe to them all the ills that have befallen mankind shows profound ignorance of historical fact.

Sorry, but sometimes facts do get in the way of blind faith. As to life after death, I am still waiting for Houdini to return.
