ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew says he’s a little surprised and disappointed Jahvid Best hasn’t been cleared to participate in training camp.

Mayhew spoke to reporters Tuesday morning before another practice without Best.

Best had a season-ending concussion last year and seemed to be making progress during the offseason. The running back told The Associated Press on Monday that he was “close” to being cleared. Detroit is counting on Best to help strike a balance with its stellar passing game led by quarterback Matthew Stafford and receiver Calvin Johnson.

Mayhew says he knows defensive end Cliff Avril will eventually be at camp. He didn’t report with teammates last Thursday. Avril and the team couldn’t agree on a long-term contract, leaving him with an unsigned $10.6 million, one-year deal.
