LONDON (AP) — Kim Jiyeon of South Korea won the Olympic fencing gold medal in women’s individual sabre on Wednesday night, topping Russia’s Sofya Velikaya 15-9 to win the title.

Kim downed two-time gold medalist Mariel Zagunis of the United States in the semifinals, rallying from seven points down to earn a berth in the final.

Against Velikaya, Kim was in control virtually the entire way. She yielded only 10 points in her first two bouts Wednesday, and carried that momentum all the way through the final.

Zagunis left without any medal, falling to Ukraine’s Olga Kharlan in the bronze-medal bout.
