Talking Points: Volunteers make tournament happen

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

For 13 boys from Maui, a summer trip to Vancouver is a dream come true. Ditto for teams of 14-year-olds from places as diverse as Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Juneau, Alaska.

For the next eight days, Vancouver is the center of the baseball world for players from 10 Western states. They are here to compete for a trip to the Junior League Baseball World Series.

This tournament is here because of the vision of local baseball volunteers and aficionados. The tournament figures to be a success because of support from dozens of Little League volunteers. It is financially viable thanks to Columbia Credit Union’s sponsorship, which pays for the use of Propstra Stadium.

A lot of good work has been done to bring this family-friendly event to town. There is an easy way for the rest of us to lend support: by going to watch a ballgame or two.

Brandon Roy signed his Timberwolves’ contract and proclaimed he plans to play 35 minutes a game. Tough for Blazers fans to hear.

But, we are happy. At 28, Roy deserves to play more good basketball.
