TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A Pierce County has agreed to a settlement with federal investigators over a civil-rights complaint.

The News Tribune (http://is.gd/NACOuW ) reports the settlement requires training for all employees of the assessor’s office. The training is meant to underline policies regarding discrimination and retaliation, and procedures for handling employee complaints.

Past and current employees of the Pierce County assessor have made multiple complaints to the federal government. That led to a series of investigations that led to this settlement and payouts to current and former employees.

Five settlements add up to more than a million dollars. The county has spent an additional $412,000 on investigation costs and attorney fees.

Federal officials released a statement Friday that described the agreement as a strong signal that discrimination and retaliation will not be tolerated.
