PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling — a hero in New England for his “bloody sock” performance in 2004 — is fighting to keep his video game business from going under.
If the business fails, taxpayers in Rhode Island may have to pick up the tab for a $75 million loan guarantee that lured the company from Massachusetts in 2010.
Some of those who know Schilling say he brought to the business the same fierce determination — and the same big ego — that he displayed during his baseball career.
The Providence-based company laid off its entire staff of about 300 people last month. The layoffs came shortly after the company missed a $1.1 million payment to the state of Rhode Island.
