EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — Law enforcement officers in the Everett, Wash., area have taken an apparently suicidal man into custody after a three-hour standoff on a highway trestle. The drama snarled afternoon commuter traffic as drivers were diverted.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary said the man on the U.S. Highway 2 trestle on Tuesday afternoon “had a lot of personal things going on in his life.”

Leary credits police negotiators with persuading the man to climb back to safety.

The trestle crosses the Snohomish River.

The Daily Herald reports (http://is.gd/e6Jn2M ) that traffic was detoured around the trestle, creating a transportation backup that affected nearby routes as well.

Leary says the man is known to local police.
