MILWAUKEE (AP) — The San Diego Padres optioned right-hander Andrew Cashner to Double-A San Antonio and called up right-hander Brad Boxberger from Triple-A Tucson.
Cashner got the start in the Padres’ 5-2 win Saturday over the Milwaukee Brewers. He gave up two hits and one run over 2 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking two.
Padres manager Bud Black said Cashner would begin his transition from reliever to starter.
“I think there’s durability in the delivery, I think there’s resiliency in the arm that’s going to enable him to log innings,” Black said.
Boxberger has made 22 relief appearances for Tucson, going 1-2 with five saves and a 4.70 ERA.
