Turner expects tough competition to make roster

SAN DIEGO (AP) — With all the offseason changes — and the urgency of getting back to the playoffs — Norv Turner thinks the competition to make the 53-man roster will be the hardest since he took over the San Diego Chargers in 2007.

The Chargers opened minicamp on Tuesday with a walkthrough in the morning and a regular practice in the afternoon.

Turner says the Chargers’ offseason program has been geared toward preparing players for training camp.

The Chargers were 9-7 last year and missed the playoffs for the second straight year. They had a big free agent haul and then spent their first picks of the draft on players expected to help shore up the worst third-down defense in the NFL.

Says Turner: “I think it’s going to be a hard team to make.”
