BOSTON (AP) — Geoffrey Mutai has successfully defended his Boston Athletic Association 10K title by pulling away from the field and winning in 27 minutes, 29 seconds — the fastest 10K time of the year.

After pushing the pace through two miles in 8:51 on Sunday, Mutai and Philip Langat, also of Kenya, broke away from the rest of the eight-man lead pack. About halfway in, Mutai pulled away from Langat slightly.

Langat briefly got close to Mutai again past the halfway mark, but Mutai widened his lead again. He fell short of the course record of 27:19 and settled for the fastest time of the year.
