INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA has hired Big East executive Dan Gavitt as its vice president of men’s basketball championships, a new position under a restructuring.

Gavitt will oversee the Division I tournament, the NCAA’s marquee event, as well as the Division II and III men’s basketball championships. He had served as the Big East Conference associate commissioner for men’s basketball.

Gavitt essentially replaces Greg Shaheen, who resigned after 12 years overseeing the March Madness tournament and following the hiring of Mark Lewis as the new vice president overseeing all 89 national championship events. Lewis has extensive experience in sponsorships, ticket sales, private donations and merchandising agreements.

Gavitt will report to Lewis, who has not yet hired a VP to oversee women’s basketball championships.
