Salem takes a hit: Holiday Retirement goes north

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — One of Salem’s most successful homegrown businesses is moving its headquarters to the Portland suburb Lake Oswego, taking along 180 good-paying jobs.

The company is Holiday Retirement, founded in 1971 by a Salem businessman and one of the nation’s most successful retirement center companies. The company says it’s making the move by springtime.

Salem leaders tell the Statesman Journal (http://stjr.nl/zYMYa8) they’re used to the attraction the Portland area has for executives who like the cultural amenities and business advantages such as proximity to a major airport. Even the state’s governor commutes to Salem.

Still, they say, it hurts when businesses and well-paid employees head north up Interstate 5, taking along paychecks and community leadership.
