ASTORIA, Oregon (AP) — A Florida-based nonprofit organization is suing the Seaside Public Library.

The Liberty Counsel says the library violates the U.S. Constitution by denying access to the library meeting room for certain religious activities.

The Daily Astorian (http://bit.ly/zdXNVQ) reports an Enterprise man with the group wrote a letter in August 2010 seeking to use the meeting room.

Benjamin Boyd said he wanted to sponsor an evangelical outreach to help mold children into responsible citizens by shaping their moral consciousness from a Christian and Biblical viewpoint.

Library policy says that meeting rooms cannot be used for religious services or proselytizing.

The Liberty Counsel claims the policy violates the First and 14th Amendments guaranteeing free speech and equal protection.

City officials referred questions to the city attorney, who could not be reached.
