FIRST Robotics team returns to ‘Rebound Rumble’

The Camas and Washougal high schools’ FIRST Robotics team will compete against 65 other teams during the upcoming Autodesk Oregon Regional competition on Friday and Saturday, at the Memorial Coliseum, 300 N. Winning Way, in Portland.

The local team recently completed six weeks of work to build a robot for the event’s “Rebound Rumble” challenge. Last year the team won this competition and were regional champions.

The Rebound Rumble robotics game is played between two alliances of three teams each. Each alliance competes by trying to score as many of the basketballs in the hoops as possible during the 2-minute and 15-second match. Balls scored in higher hoops score alliances more points. Alliances are awarded bonus points if they are balanced on bridges at the end of the match.

Camas-Washougal team advisor Mohit Abraham said he hopes to see local residents attend the competition to cheer on the local FIRSTRobotics team.

“It’s a lot of fun for those who do end up coming,” said advisor Mohit Abraham. “It’s a spectacle like no other!”

Opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. on both days, followed by the seeding competitions.

Book fair set at Helen Baller library

There will be a book fair at the Helen Baller Elementary School library during the school day through Thursday. The book fair will also be open from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday during game night at the school.

The school is located at 1954 N.E. Garfield St.

Skills Center restaurant re-opens to public

The Clark County Skills Center restaurant, A Touch of Class, has re-opened to the public.

Unlike recent years, the restaurant will be open for breakfast and lunch every weekday. Breakfast will be served from 8:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. Lunch will be served from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The restaurant, located on the Skills Center campus at 12200 N.E. 28th St., Vancouver, is operated by the students enrolled in the Skills Center Restaurant Management and Culinary Arts program.

A Touch of Class also offers meeting rooms for groups of 10 to 200.

Teen Read Cafe is March 20

There will be a Teen Read Cafe Book Discussion Group for kids in seventh-grade and up at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at the Camas Public Library, 625 N.E. Fourth Ave.

Teens can borrow a copy of the book from the library. If they read it and come to the meeting, then they get to keep the book for free.

Sign-up is required. In addition to the discussion group, there will be snacks and an activity. The next book is Carbon Diaries 2015 by Saci Lloyd. Books are available for pick-up.

CHS Mock Trial team fares well at districts

After the Mock Trial Clark County district competition, Camas High School’s own Mock Trial team made history on Thursday, Feb. 23. For the first time in the history of the competition, two teams from the same school are moving on to the state contest in Olympia.

Mock Trial is an organization that gives students the opportunity to get real life courtroom experience, complete with the roles of attorneys, witnesses and a judge presiding over trials. It’s a competition based on courtroom demeanor and procedures, as well as a chance to perform and enhance public speaking skills. Students are rated by real life attorneys and judged on their effectiveness in trial.

Recently, 45 students from Camas High School competed in the annual Clark County Mock Trial Districts at the Clark County Courthouse.

At the end of competition, both the Camas Black Team and Camas White Team are moving on to Mock Trial State competition in Olympia next month.

Camas Mock Trial is a whole received many nominations for both best attorney and best witness. Deborah Lubanga and Sarah Rabbani tied for best attorney in their division. Alastair Graham and Eden Pollock tied for best witness in their division.

Local student graduates from Concordia

Molly Sien, of Camas, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Concordia University Portland at its fall commencement ceremony on Dec. 17, 2011.

Concordia University, a private, Christian, liberal arts university located in Northeast Portland, Ore., has nearly 3,000 students and approximately 300 graduated in December 2011.

CHS student selected as delegate for conference at George Mason University

Emily Hull, a student at Camas High School, has been selected to represent Washington as a national youth delegate at the 2012 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University in Washington D.C.

Hull has been awarded opportunity to join a select group of 250 students from across the country to participate in an intensive study week-long of leadership in environmental science and conservation. Hull was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in leadership in the sciences and conservation studies.

The Washington Youth Summit on the Environment will be held June 24-29, 2012.

Adams lands on UGF dean’s list

Kila Adamas, of Camas, made the dean’s list at the University of Great Falls in Montana by earning a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Local students make UW dean’s list

A handful of students from the Camas-Washougal area have been named to the University of Washington dean’s list for the fall quarter.

To land on the list, students must earn a grade point average of at least 3.5, and have completed 12 graded credits.
