SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Fourteen former Syracuse players worked out for NFL scouts on Thursday in Manley Field House, including punter Rob Long.

Scouts from 31 NFL teams and a couple of general managers showed up. That’s up from 24 teams a year ago, a good sign for Orange coach Doug Marrone, whose third season at the helm ended with a five-game losing streak and no bowl appearance.

The workouts were closed to the media, but afterward Long said he was cancer-free and sported a full head of hair. A year ago, he had just overcome a cancerous brain tumor when he took part in pro day. This time he’s optimistic he’ll get a shot in some camp.

Defensive end Chandler Jones says teams also are looking at him as an outside linebacker.
