Groups call for changes to Oregon trapping laws

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Animal-welfare and conservation groups are calling for restrictions on wildlife trapping to protect pets.

The Mail Tribune of Medford reports the groups on Friday petitioned the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission for changes in trapping laws.

The groups say Central Oregon dogs have been injured or killed over the winter.

The groups want traps kept more than 100 feet from trails on public land and warning signs that will alert walkers.

They also want the law to require trappers to check traps and snares more frequently.

Oregon Wildlife Division spokeswoman Michelle Dennehy says the Fish And Wildlife Commission has already scheduled a biennial review of trapping rules during its June meeting.
