Wind knocks out power for some Clark County residents

High winds caused a few power outages throughout Clark County on Monday.

The largest power outage of the day, in the Salmon Creek area, affected around 1,938 people, according to the Clark Public Utilities outage map. The outage, at about 11 a.m., was caused by a tree falling into power lines near a substation, said Erica Erland, spokeswoman for Clark Public Utilities. Power was restored at 12:20 p.m.

Earlier in the day, at about 7:20 a.m., a tree fell across a line and pulled down a pole in the Venersborg area, east of Battle Ground. About 228 were without power until 8:30 a.m. because of that outage, Erland said.

There were a handful of other outages caused by wind-related problems, but all customers had power restored by early afternoon, Erland said. The grid remained intact Monday evening.

A strong weather system prompted the National Weather Service to issue a series of watches and warnings over the Northwest by Monday morning, among them was a high wind warning that included Vancouver. Forecasters also expected plenty of rain, heavy mountain snow and even stronger winds near the Washington and Oregon coasts.

Temperatures were expected to drop into the mid-30s Monday night into Tuesday, making low-elevation snow a possibility for Southwest Washington. See Page B6 for more on weather.
