SEATTLE (AP) — The 8-year-old girl critically hurt when a gun brought to school by a fellow third-grader accidentally discharged is talking when she is awake, but her doctor says she’ll have to eat and drink through a feeding tube in her abdomen for weeks or months.

Amina Kocer-Bowman has undergone five surgeries, lost her gallbladder, part of her small intestine and a major vein. She was shot in a Bremerton classroom on Feb. 22. The 9-year-old boy who brought the gun to class was sentenced to 12 months of probation earlier this month. He was found guilty of misdemeanor charges that included unlawful possession of a gun and bringing a dangerous weapon to school.

The boy found the handgun at his mother’s house. The mother and her boyfriend were charged Tuesday with third-degree reckless assault, a felony.
