DALLAS (AP) — SMU has fired men’s basketball coach Matt Doherty after six seasons.
The Mustangs announced Doherty’s dismissal Tuesday. Doherty went 13-19 this year and 80-109 in six years with SMU.
Doherty is a former national coach of the year at North Carolina. He coached the Tar Heels for three years until he was pressured to resign in April 2003. He coached Florida Atlantic for one year before SMU hired him in April 2006.
Doherty was a splashy hire for a program known largely as a basketball backwater. The Mustangs have not made the NCAA tournament since 1993, and the school elected to make a change before its jump to the Big East in 2013.
SMU ended this season Wednesday with a 74-56 loss to Marshall in the Conference USA tournament.
