STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — With Stanford not hosting the NCAA tournament at home in Maples Pavilion this March, coach Tara VanDerveer hoped to hit the road and head East.

The Hall of Famer got her wish with a cross-country trek. The second-ranked Cardinal will travel to Norfolk, Va., to face Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Hampton (26-4) in the first round Saturday.

Stanford (31-1), the No. 1 seed in the Fresno Region, won its 12th straight conference regular-season crown. The Cardinal are riding a school-record 28-game winning streak and vying for a fifth straight trip to the Final Four.

VanDerveer’s team — which just debuted its “Nerd City Kids” music video — is headed to the Eastern time zone to open the NCAA tournament for the first time since losing in the second round at Georgia in 2000.
