YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — Fire authorities say a 6-year-old playing with matches started a fire that caused $40,000 damage to an Yakima apartment building and sent a woman to a hospital.

Battalion Chief Abel Castilleja says the child started the fire in bushes Tuesday afternoon and the flames spread up the building wall to the attic.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports (http://is.gd/OaOv19 ) a resident who tried to extinguish the fire was treated for smoke inhalation.
