LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Baby boomers are staying more active to try to change the face of aging.
Those who study sports participation say the 78 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964 are playing more sports with most doing fitness and outdoor activities.
They sign up for swimming classes and will pay to play basketball or hockey at odd hours in facilities used by young people during the day.
Boomers are the first generation where large numbers exercised from their early years onward.
A 2011 survey by a sporting goods manufacturing group shows that after a two-year decline in sports such as soccer, baseball and basketball, the percentage of people of all ages participating in team sports grew by low single digits.
Participation had suffered due to the economic slowdown.
