ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Canonize defeated Gladding by a half-length to win the $71,800 Santana Mile on Sunday at Santa Anita, giving trainer Ron Ellis a sweep of the weekend’s major stakes races.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Canonize ran the distance in 1:33.89 and paid $5.40, $3 and $2.60 in winning a stakes race for the first time at age 6.

Gladding returned $3.40 and $3.20, while Honour the Deputy was another 8 1-4 lengths back in third and paid $4.20 to show.

Ellis also trains Include Me Out, who won the $300,000 Santa Margarita Stakes for fillies and mares on Saturday. Samantha Siegel’s Jay Em Ess Stables owns both winners.

Siegel says the weekend was “a blast” and that she doesn’t have winning weekends very often so she planned to enjoy it.

The victory, worth $43,080, increased Canonize’s career earnings to $228,784, with five wins in 13 starts.
