SELAH, Wash. (AP) — A Yakima County sheriff’s spokesman says a 17-year-old boy handling a gun he had just received as a gift accidentally fired the weapon in his home, fatally wounding his mother in another room.

Sheriff’s spokesman Stew Graham said Monday the bullet passed through a wall and hit 33-year-old Vonda Willis-Jean of Selah, Wash., in the head. She died at a local hospital.

Graham says the teen was in legal possession of the handgun when it went off Saturday.

The spokesman says he doesn’t know who gave the boy the gun.
