Letter: Religious debates get complicated

The Columbian
Published: March 19, 2012, 5:00pm

Reading John Cannon’s March 5 letter, “Rules of conduct are clear,” it’s evident he deplores use of contraception. “Christianity,” he writes, “reminds us of the moral ideal.” Sounds lovely, but don’t forget there are Protestant Christians, too. Why, for example, do those denominations allow clerics to marry, whereas this is strictly forbidden in the Catholic priesthood? Here are two completely opposite positions, yet both are in accordance with the precepts of Christianity.

If we must niggle about dogmas, let’s try to address ourselves to fellow believers who dissent, not outsiders who disagree. You’re not going to change any minds doing otherwise.
