FORT BENNING, Ga. (AP) — Fort Benning’s top general is scheduled to transfer to a joint Army and Air Force base in the northwest after being nominated for a promotion.

The Pentagon announced Tuesday that Maj. Gen. Robert Brown, who has served as Fort Benning’s commanding general since November 2010, has been tapped to lead the Army’s I Corps based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. If his new assignment and promotion are confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Brown will rise to the rank of lieutenant general.

Fort Benning officials said Brown’s departure date has not been determined.

Brown is no stranger to his newly assigned base 45 miles south of Seattle. He previously commanded the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Lewis before it merged with McChord Air Force Base in 2010.
