M’s set roster for Japan trip

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — The Seattle Mariners set their 30-man travel roster for the team’s trip to Japan to open the regular season.

The Mariners leave for Japan later on Thursday. They will play exhibition games against Japanese teams the Hanshin Tigers on Saturday and the Yomiuri Giants on Monday in Tokyo before a two-game regular-season series against the Oakland Athletics on March 28-29.

The Mariners’ roster has 14 pitchers, four catchers, seven infielders and five outfielders.

Right-handers Blake Beavan, Steve Delabar, Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma, Shawn Kelley, Brandon League, Hector Noesi, Erasmo Ramirez, Chance Ruffin and Tom Wilhelmsen are on the roster, as are left-handers Charlie Furbush, Lucas Luetge, George Sherrill and Jason Vargas.

Hernandez and Vargas are the scheduled starters against the Athletics on March 28 and 29.

Catchers John Jaso, Jesus Montero, Miguel Olivo and Guillermo Quiroz; infielders Dustin Ackley, Chone Figgins, Munenori Kawasaki, Alex Liddi, Brendan Ryan. Kyle Seager and Justin Smoak and outfielders Mike Carp, Carlos Peguero, Michael Saunders, Ichiro Suzuki and Caspee Wells round out the roster.

The Mariners must set a 28-man roster from those 30 players before the games against Oakland. Only 25 of those 28 players will be eligible to play.

The club also sent left-hander Cesar Jimenez to Triple-A Tacoma.
