RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Former FIFA President Joao Havelange remains hospitalized in Brazil for a bacterial infection in his right ankle.

The Samaritano Hospital said in a statement Friday the 95-year-old Havelange is breathing without a ventilator but his condition still requires close attention.

Havelange was hospitalized Sunday with septic arthritis, a dangerous bacterial infection that affects the joints. It remains unclear if the infection has spread.

Havelange led FIFA from 1974-98. He resigned from the International Olympic Committee last year, citing undisclosed health reasons. He avoided possible suspension for allegedly taking kickbacks from former FIFA marketing partner ISL in the 1990s.
