Volquez helps Padres beat Reds 5-2

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Edinson Volquez pitched into the sixth inning against his old team and the San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-2 on Friday night.

Volquez allowed two runs and two hits in 5 2-3 innings. He struck out six, including 2010 NL MVP Joey Votto twice.

Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso, acquired from Cincinnati in the same December trade that send Volquez to San Diego, went 2 for 3 with a triple and scored twice. Will Venable and John Baker had two RBIs apiece.

Bronson Arroyo allowed five runs and six hits in four innings for Cincinnati. He struck out two and walked five.

Ryan Ludwick and Jay Bruce each had an RBI single for the Reds.
