Cleanup of petroleum leak at Tesoro refinery

ANACORTES, Wash. (AP) — Cleanup is under way for a leak of about 27,000 gallons of petroleum at the Tesoro refinery in Anacortes.

The Washington Department of Ecology says the fuel spilled from an above-ground storage tank into a containment basin on Friday morning.

The cause of the spill is under investigation. Ecology officials say it has not affected surface water in the surrounding area.

The containment basin rests on highly compacted soil. Crews will drain the basin and recapture as much of the petroleum as possible. The rest of the water will go into the refinery’s wastewater treatment system. The soil also will be cleaned.
