NIreland’s Michael Hoey wins Hassan II Trophy

AGADIR, Morocco (AP) — Michael Hoey of Northern Ireland won the Hassan II Trophy by three strokes Sunday, ending Matteo Manassero’s bid to qualify for the Masters.

Hoey shot a 7-under 65 in the final round at the Golf du Palais Royal course for a 17-under 271 total. Damien McGrane of Ireland, who either led or shared the lead for three rounds, shot a 70 to finish runner-up.

Manassero needed to win to enter the top 50 in the world rankings to make the Masters, which starts April 5. He entered the final round tied for the lead at 12 under, but shot a 72 for a share of sixth place.

The 18-year-old Italian was looking to make his professional debut at the Masters. He competed in the 2009 Masters as the British amateur champion.
