STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Bill O’Brien got a little distracted while sitting in church Sunday.

Monday is a big deal for Penn State’s new head coach.

It’s the start of spring practice, the first day the ex-offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots can start officially coaching the Nittany Lions. O’Brien said he thought in church Sunday about how he’s gone from calling plays at the Super Bowl for the Patriots to preparing for spring ball in his rookie season as a head coach.

He said the first two days of camp will focus on first- and second-down situations.

O’Brien was hired in January to take over for the late Joe Paterno, who was ousted by school trustees in November in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against a retired assistant coach.
