ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — A Christian boarding school in Southern Oregon is suing over having to pay higher sewer and water bills because of its tax-exempt status.

The Roseburg News-Review newspaper (http://bit.ly/GRvVaf) reported Monday that Canyonville Christian Academy has filed a discrimination lawsuit in Douglas County Circuit Court against the city of Canyonville.

The lawsuit argues that the city has no basis for charging tax-exempt organizations such as public schools and churches twice the going rate for water and adding a surcharge for sewer service.

The school learned about the higher rates when it asked for a refund after a water pipe broke.

School officials say the overcharges amount to about $200,000 since 1988, which is as far back as its records go.
