NEW YORK (AP) — Former marathon world-record holder Khalid Khannouchi has retired because of foot injuries.

The Moroccan set the world record in 1999 in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 42 seconds to win the Chicago Marathon, becoming the first man to run under 2:06.

He became a U.S. citizen in 2000 and broke his own record, setting the American record in 2:05:38 at the 2002 London Marathon.

The 40-year-old Khannouchi won the Chicago Marathon three times between 1997 and 2002.

Foot injuries allowed him to run only sporadically. His last marathon came at the 2007 U.S. Olympic Marathon trials in New York, where he finished fourth, one spot off the 2008 team for the Beijing Games.
