SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Organizers are seeking $223,000 in private donations to build a memorial for fallen state troopers at the Oregon State Police headquarters on the Capitol Mall in Salem.

It would honor the 33 troopers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Retired deputy superintendent Greg Willeford told the Statesman Journal (http://is.gd/Ew45hH ) the committee planning the memorial hopes to break ground on June 1.

Organizers say the new memorial is not intended to take anything away from a memorial at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training academy. Fallen state troopers are among the more than 160 names of law enforcement officers in Oregon.
