Royal headache: Palace Road to shut for Olympics

LONDON (AP) — Even Britain’s royals are being hit by Olympic road closures.

London transport officials say they will be shutting the Mall — the main boulevard leading to Buckingham Palace, the home of Queen Elizabeth II — for three months beginning in June because of the Olympics.

The closure starts after the Trooping the Colour celebration of the queen’s official birthday on June 16 and ends after the Paralympics finish on Sept. 9.

Transport for London says the closure, to both cars and pedestrians, is needed so Olympic organizers can build a stadium to hold the beach volleyball competition.

The Olympics start on July 27 and end Aug. 12.
