BEND, Ore. (AP) — A 5-year-old Bend girl stricken with life-threatening meningitis nearly two weeks ago has improved from critical to serious condition at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland.

Deschutes County health officials say tests have determined that the disease contracted by the girl is not the same strain as a Crook County outbreak a few months ago.

KTVZ reports (http://is.gd/1SI2SS ) health officials rushed last week to provide antibiotics to about 40 people who had been in contract with the little girl.

It’s the county’s first case of the illness since last June.
