BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Helio Castroneves continued a strong start by capturing the pole at the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.

Castroneves turned in a fast lap of 1:10.4768 in Saturday’s qualifying after opening with a win at St. Petersburg. James Hinchcliffe earned his best career start at second, in 1:10.5222, followed by Scott Dixon (1:10.5291) and Mike Conway (1:10.6791).

Honda closed the gap from its first week of competition with Chevrolet, which still had four of the top six qualifiers. Dixon and Conway gave Honda two spots near the front a week after Chevrolet claimed the first five positions.

Defending champion Will Power failed to advance into the Fast 6 after winning the event’s first two poles. His final lap in Round 2 wasn’t counted because it came under a yellow flag.
