PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Protesters have tussled with police during a May Day march in downtown Portland, and police have made a handful of arrests.

Up to 100 protesters set out on an unpermitted march late Tuesday morning. Some got off the sidewalk and into the street. Police on horses and bikes tried to push them back onto the sidewalk, and a shoving match ensued.

Protesters continued their march and confrontations with the police continued.

A police spokesman said five or six people were arrested.
