Vancouver Heights — St. Joseph Catholic church will not, repeat not, be opening its doors to the homeless during daytime in the winter. The city of Vancouver recently quashed that plan by informing church staff that city zoning won’t allow it. Rev. Gary Lazzeroni convened parish meetings last month to publicize the idea of using the church’s Bosco Room as a weekday drop-in center for homeless families from November through March, when the Winter Hospitality Overflow effort houses them at night but sends them on their way during the day. According to a church newsletter, various committees were all in favor of the idea; according to whisperings The Columbian heard, parishioners were far more mixed. Now the question is moot.
