EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Another Oregon county hard hit by dwindling federal timber payments is considering asking voters to raise local taxes.
Lane County officials say public sentiment is against a tax increase big enough to restore the major cuts planned in the budget that goes into effect this summer.
But the Register-Guard reports (http://bit.ly/Iv0tE9) a committee of local officials is looking at the possibility of going to the voters in November with a modest increase to patch part of the budget.
The county plans significant cutbacks in public safety, such as cutting the sheriff’s patrol force from 24 deputies to six.
