JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — The Army has confirmed the death of a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier in Afghanistan.

The base said Wednesday that 23-year-old Sgt. Nicholas M. Dickhut of Rochester, Minn., died Monday from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.

He was a member of the 3rd Stryker Brigade that deployed in December and was attached to the 82nd Airborne Division as a forward observer.

Dickhut enlisted in 2008 and was deployed in Iraq in 2009.

His death was first reported Tuesday in Minnesota by the Rochester Post-Bulletin, which talked with his mother in Stewartville.
