KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera has been carted off the field after hurting his right knee while shagging fly balls during batting practice before Thursday night’s game at Kansas City.
Baseball’s career saves leader was tracking down a ball near the wall in center field when his right knee appeared to buckle. He was grimacing while sitting on the ground in the outfield, and trainers placed him on a cart and took him off the field through a tunnel in the Royals’ bullpen.
There was no immediate word on the extent of the injury.
The 42-year-old Rivera regularly catches balls during batting practice as a way to keep in shape. He’s dealt with inflammation in his right knee in the past.
