NEW YORK (AP) — Eric Chavez left the New York Yankees’ game against the Baltimore Orioles during his at-bat in the fifth inning because of a whiplash injury and possible concussion.

The Yankees say the oft-injured third baseman sustained the injury in the top of the fifth Wednesday night while diving for J.J. Hardy’s double down the line.

Still, Chavez tried to bat in the bottom half. After taking a called strike two, Chavez attempted to set himself in the batter’s box but called time and appeared to steady himself by grabbing his left thigh. He tried to steady himself again then stepped out. Chavez needed to be helped off the field and paused before being helped down the dugout steps.

Eduardo Nunez pinch hit for Chavez and fouled a pitch off before striking out looking. The strikeout is credited to Chavez.
