MONACO (AP) — The IAAF says that athletes and officials who take part in illegal betting at the Olympics and other events will face bans of two to four years.
Track and field’s governing body agreed on the policy at a council meeting, and it was implemented earlier this month. The severity of the sanctions depends on the seriousness of the violation and is subject to aggravating factors.
In an email to The Associated Press on Monday, the IAAF said it “decided to make (the) first step.”
IOC president Jacques Rogge previously warned that illegal betting is as big a threat to sport as doping.
