SEATTLE (AP) — A former coal gasification plant in Bremerton, Wash., has been added to the federal government’s hazardous cleanup list.
The Environmental Protection Agency will manage the cleanup of Bremerton Gasworks under its Superfund cleanup program.
EPA’s Dan Opalski says cleaning up the contaminated site will stop another source of pollution from getting into Puget Sound.
Sediments, soils and groundwater at the site have been contaminated with polyaromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals and benzene. The facility operated from 1930 to 1963 along the Port of Washington Narrows, about a mile from downtown Bremerton.
The Suquamish Tribe uses the area for fishing.
