STANWOOD, Wash. (AP) — The Nature Conservancy has started work on a project to remove an old farm dike and restore 150 acres of estuary at the mouth of the Stillaguamish River near Stanwood.
Port Susan program manager Kat Morgan says the project will improve habitat for salmon, waterfowl and other creatures that need a mix of salt and fresh water. The $4 million project includes rebuilding another dike for flood protection.
The Daily Herald reports (http://is.gd/qu6vyr ) the old dike was built in the 1950s by a farmer, the son of a Dutch immigrant. The environmental group bought the property in 2001 from his estate for $2 million.
The old dike may be breached in October.
