EAGLE POINT, Ore. (AP) — With employees on strike, the Eagle Point school district in southern Oregon has resumed classes with substitute teachers crossing picket lines.

The district said that more than 2,500 students attended classes Monday, for an attendance rate of about 63 percent. In a statement, the district said its normal attendance rate is about 93 percent.

Buses were a problem area, with one breakdown, some buses running late and some students being missed at their stops.

The school district said 55 union members returned to work.

The strike began last Tuesday, and classes were canceled last week. Bargaining was scheduled to resume Tuesday. Class sizes and health insurance are at issue.

The district near Medford has 328 employees, including 186 teachers and a total of about 4,100 students.
