SALZBURG, Austria (AP) — World Cup overall champion Marcel Hirscher has been briefly hospitalized with several bruises after crashing his car into a tree.

Hirscher was on his way to a public relations event Monday for the 2013 world championships in Schladming. The Austrian ski federation says he steered his car off the road to avoid a collision after a vehicle coming from the opposite direction crossed his lane.

Hirscher says: “I am glad I reacted this way and didn’t risk a frontal crash. It all hurts a bit but nothing too serious happened apart from some bruises and a headache.” He expects to resume training soon.
