PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An elderly Portland man called firefighters for help when his dog disappeared in a sinkhole in his back yard.

Portland Fire and Rescue says firefighters found the dog Sunday at the bottom of a 6-foot hole. They carefully widened the hole until the dog could be lifted out and reunited with its owner.

The hole may have been an old cistern that suddenly gave way.
